July 10, 2024, KNU-Central
Karen National Union (KNU) hosted an event to launch Kawthoolei Unicode on July 10, 2024.
Kawthoolei Unicode was developed to ensure consistent electronic typing of the Karen language across KNU’s administrative departments, Karen Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Karen Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the Karen communities worldwide. It aims to facilitate the convenient reading and use of the Karen language on the internet, social media sites, and other electronic devices.
Kawthoolei Unicode was developed to further integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) for database management, Google searches, and Google Translate in the Karen language. Keeping up with current computer technology trends, KNU is continually working to enhance the use of the Karen language and will persist in these efforts.
Currently, Kawthoolei Unicode supports only the Sgaw Karen language. However, there are plans to expand its capabilities to include other Karen languages, specifically East and West Pwo Karen, in the future.
